Outdoor Photo Session With Ika

Here's a pretty sneaky, sneak preview from our most recent outdoor shoot with Ika at Chinese Garden, Singapore. The day started really bright for our shoot actually, until it started to drizzle much later in the afternoon. But all went good in the end & we've definitely managed to create some of the captures that we wanted, so it's definitely a fruitful session for us.

Poppin' Radio In The Ice

In my previous post 'Holga Mixing & Maxing', I wrote about using my radio popper to trigger the Holga 15B flash that's not attached to the camera but placed behind my subject. By doing so, I'm able to flash it simultaneously with my Canon 430EXII flash on my camera.

Many were asking me what exactly 'radio poppers' were.

If you've heard of the PocketWizard, you'll know how expensive it can be for the beginner photography enthusiasts. Well what I've got here is the cheaper alternative: Phottix Wireless Flash Triggers.

A complete set of the flash triggers will give you the transmitter & receiver. And what I like best about the Phottix Aster is that they can be triggered optically as well ie. flash will also fire off the Holga 15B when it's attached to the receiving end of the Phottix set. This feature is really useful for cameras that have no hot shoe mounts on them, but can still use their inbuilt flash to create the same effect.

My favourite vendor for those residing in Singapore would be Red Dot Photo. But there's always eBay or Amazon, always. I part most of my income through them anyway. Evil, evil..

Holga Mixing & Maxing

Look at what I've got here: A Holga 15B flash with 5 colour filters for my Holga 135BC. And not only that, this attachment will work with any camera that has a standard hot shoe socket. So that means, it'll work with my Canon DSLR & also my Lubitel! Sounds fun? It sure is!

Khloe of Multiple Choice alerted us of the ongoing Singapore River Flea Market at Clarke Quay where she had set up a booth selling some of our favourite toy cameras & also a couple of fun accessories to go along with them. She's got great discounts going on for selected items there too so if you're interested, try to make it by Sunday as it'll be the last weekend before Christmas already. Hurry hurry!

Remember my previous post titled 'Lomography Mods' where I wrote about attaching my Canon 430EXII external flash to my Holga 135BC? If you look at this photo closely, I've actually done the reverse: My Canon  DSLR did some flashing with the 15B instead. Well, I've tried it out & the flash did work as I've expected.

And then, something struck me. Instead of directly attaching the Holga flash to my DSLR, why not utilise my radio popper as well? That way, while I have my 430EXII on the camera itself, the 15B flash unit can be used to provide some coloured background lighting as shown below:

I just needed to add a little fill with my Canon flash to light up the front of my subject. Needed a little trial & error though, but I was quite pleased with how it turned out in the end.

I'm actually quite excited for my shoot with Ika on the 24th. That'll be the best time for me to experiment lots of styles with her just because she's my crazy friend. So, I'm pretty sure she wouldn't mind, right? Of course she wouldn't!

What I'm doing now is just to source out for ideas for her shoot. Once it's done, we'll need to meet & discuss. For now, just proceed with your Christmas shopping.

A Wild Wild Night To Remember

When someone requests you specially to be in a group shot with them, how would you feel? Now, how much more rewarding can it be when you're the one working alone at the event & such requests are actually quite hard to come by before this, if any, & suddenly throughout that whole one party you keep getting such requests?

You'll be pleasantly surprised & feel much appreciated, won't you? For once, I sure loved being in photos!

Much thanks to all those involved at the party, & to Lin especially who really looked after me. Actually, she was the one who made me eat during the event & gave me a glass of water while shooting. Everyone there too was really, really nice. So glad to have been able to join them that night & be crazy through & through!

And out of the whole album of photos I've shot for them, guess which one was the most talked about?

This one. Jess' boots were definitely worth snapping for!

Christmas is coming soon & we still have lots of planned shoots left before we officially leave 2010. 2011 will be even more awesome with the addition of several new gears in our arsenal & hopefully, even more requests.

2011 will be a year of many, many surprises. Afterall, it'll be our make or break year. Can't wait for it already!

To Love, Or Not To Love

My point & shoot camera's not been utilised for such a long time now. And when I brought it out yesterday, I realised once again why I loved it so much!

Just yesterday, we were having a Pre-Christmas Dinner Tweetup & I told one of my friends how I loathed carrying around the DSLR. And that's when she said it's the first time she's hearing a photographer hating his own camera.

This love-hate relationship is sort of true, I guess.

I still prefer shooting in the streets with my simplistic Blackberry camera phone or my Fujifilm point & shoot. They're both light & convenient to use, & won't scare anyone out in the streets. Or perhaps some of my toy cameras or Russian cameras could do the trick too. So I'm just saving my DSLR for my commercial shoots, if not, it's quite fun shooting with restrictions from my non-DSLR cameras.

And that's how I got a clean shot of my newfound friend with my F40fd!

By the way, in the future we could start offering both theory & practical beginner lessons on photography if you're interested, since we've already tutored someone just now & it went quite well actually. Just need to sort out on a few things here & there, & we'll be up & running in no time.

Toys For Kids

If there's a lesson we can learn from this family shoot, it's this: As long as there are kids to shoot, always bring toys over even if they're already 7 years of age. It'll really help, trust us. It's so hard to capture their attention in their excited states; our Giotto Rocket Blower wasn't enough unfortunately to grant us a little respite from all those chasing after. We're just too old to catch up with them, though it's so fun just to watch them run & run & run!

We definitely love shooting kids though because their expressions are almost always natural & their curiosity will lead us to places where no adult feet will ever bring us. We've actually crawled under tables for some of our shots just to get up close with them.

For sure, you'll never get tired of them. Wish we could've spent more time with Ranjith's kids that day though. And thanks for the lunch treat too!

So what have we been up to these days? Lots of client-meetings for next year already! It's amazing the number of requests we've been getting. The December holiday period is going to be one really hectic time for us too.

Lomography Mods

Ever thought of attaching the external flash of your Canon, Nikon, etc system to your toy camera? Well, it's not impossible!

The only downside to this though is that you'll have to set your flash power manually since your toy cameras will not be able to utilise the TTL flash metering modes.

But isn't that what lomography is all about? It's all about experimenting!

And if you want to take it a level further, there are actually toy camera lenses available in the market which you can fix to your DSLR: The Diana F+ SLR Adaptors.

You can also create A Bargain Macro Lens for your DSLR.

Weekend Warrior

The past weekend had definitely been a really hectic one for us! The first event on Saturday was IIT Alumni's Diwali Celebration held at Fort Canning Park. They've had one of India's singing sensation Raja Hasan perform for them & everyone went crazy during his last number. They even pulled us in to dance along with them. It was awesome!

And the next night, we were invited to shoot a private birthday party at Fullerton Bay Hotel for Sasty & her gorgeous friends. The hotel was really spacious & the ambience there was superb. The whole event lasted until 1AM but this was easily one of the most comfortable shoots we've ever done.

So now it's time for us to look at these photos & work on them for a while. We'll post some of them up on our FB page once we're done editing them all.

Lomography is really an addictive hobby, even though it could be an expensive one bearing in mind the costs involved in film & processing. And be warned that there's a high chance you won't stop at one camera, & instead will keep on increasing your collection to include a range of other camera effects.

So why wait? Lomo cameras can be as cheap at 15USD & it can get even cheaper when you purchase them through eBay!

Maiden Post!

Well, it's been a long time coming! All these while, we were heavily engaging clients through Twitter & Facebook but after much thinking, we decided that a blog for Roosh Photography will be a good platform for us to share ideas & tips and also to reach out to more audiences who are keen to know more about our photoshoots' behind-the-scenes.

And once in a while, we'll also be posting tutorials which will definitely benefit those interested in photography.
